Welcome to PsyPrep

Bespoke psychology tutoring for A-Level, taught university degrees and job-seeking.

About PsyPrep

I offer a personalised and dedicated psychology tutoring service across a range of educational levels, plus coaching and mentoring for the challenging world of early-career psychology job-searching.

Psychology is a difficult subject. Through my bespoke tuition, I can bring out the best version of your inner psychologist, focusing in on your specific requirements and ambitions.

For most students, this level will be their introduction to the field of psychology. Many find that it differs from other scientific subjects at A-level, in that there is a strong focus on critical engagement with research. While anyone can learn to do this well, it can take some getting used to.

Having said this, studying psychology can be hugely rewarding. It is one of the few subjects at this level which encourages debate and critical thinking over rote learning and memorisation. It provides a foundation for being able to engage with complex information across different areas in life and in work. It also provides insights into who we are, why we do the things we do, and perhaps even ways to lead more fulfilling lives.

At this level, I can offer tutoring in the following areas:

  • All content required by your syllabus

  • Key studies in psychology

  • Key theories in psychology

  • Critical analysis and independent thinking

  • Key debates in psychology

  • Structuring academic arguments and use of evidence

  • Foundations of ethics in psychology

Advancing to the undergraduate level can feel like a big step. It will be the first time students focus almost entirely on one academic subject. It is also a time to develop greater intellectual independence, and to engage with how research is designed.

Undergraduate psychology also comes with new challenges. Many find more advanced statistics to be daunting, but with the right approach, they do not have to be difficult! There is also a greater expectation on students to be able to independently evaluate evidence and sources, and to independently criticise the material they are presented with.

Undergraduate psychology degrees follow specific syllabi which are generally consistent across university programmes. Tutoring at this level focuses non-exhaustively on:

  • Source evaluation

  • Active reading

  • Effective note taking

  • Style and structure of academic writing

  • Quantitative analysis and common statistical methods in psychology

  • Qualitative analysis and interpretation

  • Correct referencing

Postgraduate study is for those who want to pursue a career in research, develop their academic skills even further, improve their CV, or simply for the love of study. Tutoring is for taught postgraduate study (e.g., PGCert, PGDip, Masters degrees)

However, it represents another step up in difficulty. Assignments become more challenging, with higher standards when it comes to marking. There will often be an expectation of deeper engagement with the material, including familiarity with relevant philosophical concepts and with the scientific method.

  • Synthesis of academic literature

  • Advanced critical thinking skills

  • Research design

  • Philosophy of science, and how to integrate this into your work

Please note that sessions will be focused on developing your study and academic skills. For university-level study in particular, course content should be learned from lecturers and the materials offered by your institution.

Early career roles in clinical psychology can be very competitive.

Support and honest feedback can help give you the best possible chance of securing graduate jobs. This is not always obtainable from employers.

I can offer support, using extensive experience on both ends of interview panels, especially in the following areas:

  • Proof-reading applications

  • Interview preparation

  • Post-interview reflection

  • Support with revision, e.g., for statistics exams

Tutoring Approach

Teaching starts with a comprehensive needs analysis to ensure that your goals and needs are at the forefront of lesson planning. I take a collaborative approach to teaching and will always be receptive to feedback. The most important thing is that tutoring works for you.

Psychology is a fun, fulfilling and enlightening subject to study. It can be intellectually and emotionally challenging. So, my aim when teaching is to make it enjoyable and to appropriately set the challenge to push my students without leaving them discouraged.
